When should I use this?
Screen recordings have a broad application in education. Below are several examples on when you might use this type of software.
- If students or parents are experiencing the same issue over and over again, it usually saves you a lot of time to just do one simple screen recording to visually show them what to do. Then, all you need to do is forward the video, instead of re-explaining yourself. Also, trying to explain how to address a problem with words alone is always difficult.
- If you want to record your lecture, so students could watch before taking an assessment, or joininig the class in a video conference to answer questions. In order to make sure that students watched the video you could add a small bridge question using Google Form. You could see how to do that in one of the videos below.
- If you want to provided nuanced feedback, adding empathy and emphasis through your voice.
What could I use?
There are a ton of screen capture solutions, several are found in the link below, but in this articles I have focused squarely on Zoom and Loom.
Zoom
If you are looking to keep things simple, you might want to just leverage Zoom. Zoom allows you to record your live video conferences, but it does just as well recording just you. No need to learn another piece of software since Zoom offers most, if not all of what you would need.
You could likely do the same thing with Google Meet
Loom
Loom is especially great when you want to share your screen, and has a few features that make it really interesting for educational settings.
- Google Log-in
- Threaded Discussions
- Time Based Commenting
- Emoji Reactions 👍
