What is a placeholder text (in general)?

Placeholder text is text used to fill spaces to see how a web page will look like. Web developers traditionally use lorem ipsum text as placeholder text. The lorem ipsum text is randomly scraped from a famous passage by Cicero of Ancient Rome.
